I think everyone LOVES golden hour and for good reason. But when Annalysse and Ben booked their engagement session at Grant Meadow Overlook in Pickens, SC, I decided I wanted to shoot through three different sunlight types and not focus on just golden hour.
The variety in their gallery is AMAZING… & here’s why I think every couple should consider it, and how you can do it without turning your session into an all-day event.
1. Your gallery gets way more variety. Golden hour is dreamy, no doubt. But if every single photo has that same warm, hazy glow, your gallery can start to feel a little repetitive. Mixing in some brighter daylight shots and moody blue hour frames gives your gallery range, some light and airy, some warm and romantic, some rich and dramatic.
2. Different light tells a different story. Daylight feels fun, candid, and true-to-life. Golden hour feels soft and romantic. Blue hour feels intimate and a little cinematic. Shooting all three means your gallery doesn’t just capture one mood, it captures the whole feel!
3. It doesn’t actually take that long, especially when the breaks feel good. This is the part people don’t expect. Annalysse and Ben’s whole session wasn’t some marathon day of shooting. We simply timed our start so daylight rolled into golden hour, which rolled into blue hour (with a couple of short breaks in between).
But here’s the thing that makes those breaks actually work. They weren’t just standing around waiting on the light. This is where getting to know your couple matters just as much as knowing your settings. When you take the time to actually connect with your couple, ask about how they met, laugh about wedding planning stress, hear about their families. Those in-between moments stop feeling like dead air and start feeling like part of the experience. Annalysse and Ben and I were chatting the whole time, so when we picked the cameras back up for blue hour, it didn’t feel like we were starting over. It felt like we were just continuing the conversation.
That’s it. No hours-long shoot required, just intentional timing and genuine connection to fill the gaps.
