Not every session needs to be a whole production! Some of my favorite photos come from short, simple golden hour sessions. Just 30 minutes, one location, and really good light! I recently did one of these right here in Greenville, and it’s a perfect example of how much you can capture when the time is used well.
If you’re thinking about booking a mini session, here’s how I make every minute count.
1. We pick one location, not three
With a full 30 minutes, there’s no time to drive around town. I like to choose one spot in Greenville and use get the most use possible out of that one location! This is a perfect opportunity to get as creative as possible.
2. We start before “golden hour” actually starts
Everyone wants that glowy, warm light, but if we wait until the sun is right on the horizon, we’ll only get about ten usable minutes of it. I usually start 10-15 minutes before peak golden hour so we can ease in, get comfortable, and ease into the sunset light instead of racing against it.
3. Comfort comes first (always)
Thirty minutes goes by fast, so I don’t spend it barking directions. A few simple prompts, some real conversation, a little movement, that’s it! The best photos usually happen in the in-between moments, not the posed ones.
4. We keep wardrobe simple.
No outfit changes with a short session, there’s just not time. I always recommend picking one outfit you feel confident and comfortable in rather than trying to plan for three!
5. We let the light lead.
Golden hour in Greenville looks a little different depending on the season and the spot! Sometimes it’s soft and diffused through trees, sometimes it’s that warm, direct glow across an open field. I pay attention to where the light is doing the most and we build the session around that.
A short session doesn’t mean rushed or lesser-than, it just means being intentional with the time you’ve got! If you’re local to Greenville or the Upstate and want photos that feel real, unhurried, and full of good light, I’d love to help you make the most of your 30 minutes.
