This was the most difficult session I’ve ever done, and not because of these two (they’re the SWEETEST). I went straight to this proposal after running my first half marathon… while pregnant… in my first trimester. 🫠
What is normally an easy 20-minute hike turned into an absolutely brutal 45-minute uphill shuffle. But for these two, it was COMPLETELY worth it!! I would do it all over again for them🥰

The view – The view truly doesn’t get better than this. Max Patch offers a full 360° mountain views in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains! Depending on the time of year, you’ll either get wide open grassy fields, that tall golden grass you see all over Pinterest, or (my personal favorite) seasonal wildflowers. Every season feels different — and every one is stunning 🙂
Privacy – Even if the parking lot is full, the mountaintop is spacious enough that you can almost always walk far enough out to create a private moment. That’s one of the reasons a Max Patch NC proposal works so well, you get epic views without feeling like you’re on display.
Accessibility – The hike is considered easy to moderate and typically takes about 20–30 minutes. It’s just enough effort to feel adventurous, but still manageable in proposal attire. (Unless you’ve already run 13.1 miles that morning, then it’s a different story.)
Timing – If you’re planning a sunset proposal at Max Patch, build in buffer time. The gravel road leading up can be rough and slower than expected. The hike may take longer depending on recent rain (hello mud) or your comfort level. And once you’re at the top, you’ll want a few extra minutes to walk out to a more private area before getting down on one knee.
Weather tips – Mountain weather changes fast. Keep a close eye on the forecast the week of, and especially the day of, your proposal. Rain and fog can roll in unexpectedly, so having a flexible plan is key for any North Carolina mountain proposal.
Hire the right photographer – Max Patch is incredible, but it’s also remote. There’s about a 10-mile stretch of rough gravel road and very limited cell service. Hiring a Max Patch proposal photographer who knows the area, understands the light, and is comfortable navigating the mountain makes everything smoother and far less stressful!

Max Patch isn’t just beautiful, it’s unforgettable! The open mountain views and the quiet pockets of privacy make it one of the best places to propose in North Carolina.
Whether you’re planning a surprise proposal at Max Patch or dreaming up a mountain engagement session in NC, having someone who knows the trail, the timing, and the light makes all the difference. If you’re looking for a Max Patch proposal photographer (who will happily hike it — even after a half marathon), I’d love to help you pull it off!!
